Balzan Youths FC 2 - Sliema Wanderers FC 1
Balzan Youths moved to the sixth place in the classification and increased their hope of qualifying to the Championship pool by beating Sliema Wanderers in an exciting, middle of the table, clash.
Just after kick-off Anthony Eviparker missed the target by few inches when his header passed just over the crossbar. On the other side a minute later, Jeremiah Ani saw his shot being cleared to a corner by goalkeeper Matthew Camilleri. On the 15th minute, Sliema forged ahead when Ryan Fenech managed to beat Camilleri with a fine shot from the edge of the box. Balzan reacted and on the 25th minute they levelled matters. After dribbling past two defenders, Martin Deyanov served well Pedro Calcado who from his side managed to beat goalkeeper Henry Bonello with a low shot. On the 35th minute Calcado had another good chance to score but his low shot was well saved by Bonello. A minute later Camilleri saved an attempt by Daniel Mitev.
On resumption Sliema made a dual substitution, where Alex Muscat and Cleven Frendo came in for Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza and Clifford Gatt Baldacchino, in a bid to strengthen their attack. On the 57th minute Balzan lost Renie Forace, as he had to leave the pitch injured, while his place was taken by Silvan Ciscaldi. On the hour, Camilleri made a good save over Josef Mifsud while on the other side, two minutes later, Henry Bonello saved well a direct free-kick taken by Pedro Calcado. On the 65th minute Camilleri came to the rescue again this time over a shot by Mitev. On the 73rd minute Anthony Eviparker was deprived by Bonello on two consecutive attempts with the last rebound coming into Silvan Ciscaldi's path but his shot went high. Two minutes from normal time, Balzan were warded a penalty after substitute Fagner Lins Bernardes was fouled inside the area by Alex Muscat. Pedro Calcado took the penalty but, to the joy of Sliema supporters, his shot was brilliantly saved by Bonello. On the 90th minute Daniel Mitev for Sliema and Jonathan Francica for Balzan were both given the marching orders following an argument between them. Two minutes into the added time as the game seemed to be finishing in a draw, to the joy of their supporters, Balzan scored the winning goal. In a swift counter attack Bernardes released substitute Miguel Ciantar who managed to round goalkeeper Bonello and placed the ball into the back of the net.
