Mqabba FC 2 - Balzan Youths FC 2
In this clash, between two teams in the middle of the classification, Balzan Youths and Mqabba shared the spoils in a 2 - 2 draw. Balzan failed to acquire the three points, notwithstanding that they were in front on two occasions, as Mqabba managed to equalise with a dramatic goal in stoppage time. Missing for Balzan was New Zealander Kris Bright, after moving to Bryne FK of Norway, but had Martin Deanov and Anthony Eviparker making their first appearance. On the other hand, Marlon Briffa was missing for Mqabba, serving a match suspension but they had Julian Briffa and John Nwoba making their first appearance.
In bad weather conditions, the first half lacked action as both teams were cautious not to concede the first goal. On the 24th minute, Balzan had a good opportunity to take the lead when Martin Deanov failed to connect an inviting pass by Pedro Calcado. Ten minutes later Anthony Eviparker served Calcado but his shot was deflected to corner by a defender. Just before half time whistle, Kris Calleja saved over a long range attempt by Martin Deanov.
Nine minutes into the second half, Balzan wasted a good opportunity when Eviparker passed the ball to Deanov who in turn served Dylan Grima but unfortunately he stumbled over the ball and goalkeeper Kris Calleja managed to block. Balzan managed to break the deadlock, on the 72nd minute, when Pedro Calcado managed to beat Calleja with a low shot from inside the area, after being served by substitute Bjorn Bondin. Mqabba took only five minutes to equalise with a incredible shot from outside the box by Mauro Bonnici, which surprised goalkeeper Camilleri. However, on the 81st minute, Balzan regained the lead. After being served by Eviparker and after dribbling past a defender, Pedro Calcado managed to beat Calleja for the second time, with an angled shot from the edge of the box, which hit the upright before finishing at the back of the net. During the added time, while Balzan seemed well in control to hold their lead Mqabba had other thoughts. From a clearance over a corner-kick taken Balzan, Pierre Grima sent a long ball up-field with the ball finishing in unmarked Branislav Timotic path and from a good position managed to head the ball over Matthew Camilleri, who happened to be out of place.
